Monthly Review July 2026
10 Aug 2026This is the seventh edition of my monthly review. As I am writing this over months, I am realizing months and quarters have themes.
If June was about presence with the kids in Japan, July was all about family. The house was full : family visited from Canada and Germany. And Riya counselling and college selection went on in parallel. One of the most heart fulfilling month this was!!
July opened on Dad’s birthday (1st July). He would have been 76. He left us 5 years ago. As time has gone by, while there is sadness, there is more feeling of gratitude. Mom and Papa gave us a good life, a good education, good values and I spent the morning reflecting back instead of grieving. That set an odd, fitting tone for a month that turned out to be almost entirely about family showing up for each other.
Family & Relationships
For the first ten days of July, the house was as full as it gets : Mom, Riya, Ryan, Cherry and Aarvish, and Jatu with Suchi and the kids, all under one roof. “Most lovely feeling,” I wrote on July 3 in my morning journal, “everyone making their own plans, in and out of the house.” Cherry left for Germany mid-month, but Jatu and family were here entire July (going today - 10th August when I am writing this), and the warmth never really let up.
The centerpiece was a family road trip to Amritsar (July 12–14) : two Seltos, the whole crew, food and old-city walks. I took kids to GNDU, place where Tarun spent her childhood. It was lovely showing kids where their mother spent first 18 years of her life.
Riya’s year-long JEE and counselling marathon finally resolved this month : she got into IIIT Delhi, Computer Science and Biotechnology. A brilliant outcome after two years of exams. She moved into the hostel on August 3rd, right on the border between this report and next month’s.
Ryan and I kept building together (more in Learning below), took the kids to the arcade one evening (“super fun”), watched UP in the society theatre with the whole family, and swam together after. I also spent 3 business days in Pune (July 8–11)
The one real miss : Bihar with Mom did not happen, again. This time the honest reason is different from the last six months : Mom’s own Canada travel date shifted because of the house work, so the “3rd week of July” hard gate moved out from under the plan before I even got to it. Streak intact, but for once not self-inflicted.
Wellness & Fitness
17 gym sessions in a month with this much travel and family density is a decent number, and I’ll take it. What didn’t happen was the weight cut : the Q3 rock was 85kg to 80kg by August 4th, and it simply held flat. The honest cause is a genuinely food-heavy, social month, not neglect : Amritsar, birthdays, a full house eating together most nights :). It was just not the environment ; I should have seen and predicted batter.
Rehab continued in the background, back-safe first per the L4/L5 diagnosis from June. No heroics, no re-stacking the load that caused the degradation in the first place.
Finance & Investing
The house work kept progressing :
What didn’t happen was the written deployment thesis I’d set as the July rock. Something that will become a key focus for me in August.
Learning & Writing
Two threads here, one quiet and one shared. Early in the month I started building what I’m calling a Life OS : a proper interface for my own planning system, evolving straight out of the daily journal and weekly plan templates I’ve been living in all year. “Coming up nice,” I wrote on July 7, and there’s something fitting about the planning system itself becoming a project worth building.
The shared thread was with Ryan and Jatu : we picked up Jatu’s Maths app startup and worked to migrate to a different platform. Ryan, Jatu and I spent many days sitting on dining table, bouncing on the ideas together and building app. Whenever Ryan and I code together, it is so much fun. Grateful for this shared experience.
On the more introspective side, a July 8th flight to Pune produced an honest bit of self-examination : a nagging feeling of being broadly competent but rarely deep in anything, of talking intelligently about fields but nagging feeling that I’ve not gone as deep as I can. I named it half-jokingly as wanting to learn the Rubik’s Cube under 60 seconds, but the real question underneath : where have I actually reached the top 5% of a field : is worth sitting with rather than resolving with another shiny new hobby. No article shipped in July. The publishing cadence, which held for most of H1, took a real pause this month.
Mind & Meditation
The evening-journal one-line floor : the guardrail habit I installed after retiring the sit-meditation streak : mostly didn’t land. Most days in July, that field sat empty. What did hold, every single day without exception, was the morning affirmation : I am a warrior monk. Small, but it’s the one mind-pillar habit that’s actually sticking, and worth noticing rather than dismissing just because it’s not the bigger goal.
Joy
July’s joy was almost entirely relational : the full house, Amritsar, friend’s birthday, the arcade with the kids, movie night, and building the Maths app with Ryan and Jatu. No scheduled novelty, no micro-adventure : that’s retired, and I’m not missing it. The pattern from every month this year holds again: joy comes from people and building, not from manufacturing new experiences.
Travel
Amritsar with the extended family and few days in Pune were both real, good trips. Bihar with Mom is the seventh-month carry now, and for the first time the reason is genuinely external : her own travel calendar moved, not mine.
Office
Kept steady, as always in these posts. Nothing dramatic to report either way this month : worth a closer look in August so I’m not guessing again next time I write this.
The Honest Scorecard
| Pillar | How It Went |
|---|---|
| Family & Relationships | Very Strong. Full house for ten days, Amritsar trip, Piyali’s birthday, Riya’s IIIT Delhi admission. |
| Wellness & Fitness | Mixed. 17 gym sessions held through travel and family density. Weight cut stalled flat against a food-heavy month. |
| Finance & Investing | Moving, not there. House proceeds parked. Boundless research started (MCX, Kalyan Jewellers). Written thesis still missing. |
| Learning & Writing | Light. Life OS build underway. Maths app with Ryan. No article shipped. |
| Mind & Meditation | Struggling, honestly. Evening journal floor mostly empty. Affirmation the one habit that held. |
| Joy | Strong. Family, building, and presence : exactly the pattern every month this year has confirmed. |
| Travel | Mixed. Amritsar and Pune real wins. Bihar missed again, this time for a genuine external reason. |
| Office | Steady, thin visibility. Nothing to flag, little to celebrate either. |
Looking Ahead to August
August opens with real milestones already behind it : Riya settling into IIIT Delhi, my 48th birthday surrounded by family, and the house work accelerating faster than expected. The center of gravity for the month is a physio-cleared return to real training (careful, not a race back to where June left off), turning Boundless from research into an actual written thesis, and rebooking Bihar the moment Mom’s new travel date is real. The evening-journal habit needs an actual trigger this time, not just intention repeated for the fourth month running.
Life keeps proving the same thing this year: the things I schedule with a hard external gate get done, and the quiet solo ones don’t, unless I build a real trigger around them too.
I am a warrior monk.
This is part of a monthly series where I review my life across the pillars that matter to me. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s awareness. If you know where you are, you can choose where to go.
